OUR CHILDREN MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN: A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE SAFETY OF THE OYO SCHOOL CHILDREN

More than two weeks after the tragic incident involving school children from Oyo State, many Nigerians continue to ask painful questions about the pace and effectiveness of efforts to protect and rescue these young lives. While the situation has generated concern across the country, it should serve not as an opportunity for blame but as a sober reminder that the safety and welfare of children must remain a top priority for every level of government.

Each passing day exposes these children to numerous dangers. Beyond the emotional trauma of separation from their families, they face risks associated with harsh weather conditions, heavy rainfall, flooding, cold nights, poor sanitation, hunger, dehydration, exhaustion, mosquito-borne diseases, and other health challenges. The longer vulnerable children remain in uncertain circumstances, the greater the threat to their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.

Parents naturally carry the responsibility of nurturing, monitoring, and advocating for their children. In situations such as this, they are expected to remain actively engaged, cooperate with relevant authorities, provide useful information where necessary, and continue demanding lawful and peaceful action aimed at securing the safety of their children. The love and vigilance of parents remain an indispensable layer of protection for every child.

However, the primary responsibility for protecting citizens, especially children, rests with the state. Government institutions are expected to act swiftly, coordinate rescue and recovery efforts, deploy security and emergency resources, communicate transparently with affected families, and ensure that every available measure is taken to safeguard young lives. Children are among the most vulnerable members of society and deserve urgent attention whenever their safety is threatened.

As a society, we must also examine where we may have fallen short. Government agencies, community leaders, institutions, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens all have roles to play in building systems that prevent such situations and respond effectively when they occur. Delays, complacency, weak emergency preparedness, and inadequate coordination can carry serious consequences when children are involved.

The true measure of a nation is seen in how it protects its children. These young boys and girls are not merely statistics; they are future teachers, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, leaders, and nation-builders. Their plight should awaken a renewed sense of urgency among our leaders and all stakeholders. This is a moment to strengthen our collective commitment to protecting every Nigerian child and ensuring that no child is ever left feeling forgotten.
