Respectfully boko haram was founded in 2002 in northeastern Nigeria by Mohammed Yusuf. boko haram, officially known as Jama'at Ahl al-Sunnah li al-Da'wa wa al-Jihad, emerged in Maiduguri, Borno State, in 2002 under the leadership of Islamic preacher Mohammed Yusuf

The group initially focused on Islamic preaching (da’wah) and community organization, advocating for strict Sharia law and rejecting Western influences, which they viewed as corrupting Nigerian society
Its name, boko haram, translates from Hausa as “Western education is forbidden”, reflecting its ideological opposition to Westernization
During its first seven years, boko haram operated relatively peacefully, running religious schools and attracting followers from poor Muslim families and unemployed youth. Tensions with Nigerian security forces escalated over time, culminating in *violent clashes in July 2009
