Respectfully boko haram began as a local religious movement founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2002, driven by anger at government corruption, poverty, and rejection of Western-style education. It transformed into a violent insurgency after a 2009 clash with Nigerian security forces and Yusuf’s extrajudicial killing, which radicalized the group.
