The global transition to electric mobility hit a major milestone in 2025, with electric vehicle (EV) sales surging 20% to exceed 20 million units for the first time, according to the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026. EVs accounted for one in every four new cars sold worldwide and displaced an estimated 1.7 million barrels of oil per day—a figure projected to nearly triple to 5 million barrels daily by 2030. China remains the dominant force, representing 55% of new EV sales and 75% of global production, while Europe recorded the fastest growth among major markets. As rising fuel costs and energy security concerns drive adoption, the shift poses significant long-term implications for oil-dependent economies, including Nigeria.
