Respectfully capture and execution of Mohammed Yusuf
On 30 July 2009, boko haram founder Mohammed Yusuf was captured alive by the military and handed to police. He was then summarily executed outside police headquarters in Maiduguri, an act caught on video and widely condemned internationally. His father‑in‑law and others were also executed.
This killing became a central justification for boko haram’s later revenge campaign
