Why Do the Fulani Allow Wicked Politicians to Use Them to Destroy Nigeria and Tarnish the Good Reputation of Ahmadu Bello?

Before 1993, Fulani cattle rearers and farmers lived in peace. There were no quarrels, no chaos, no fights, and no land disputes. I live in Jos Plateau State, and I never experienced any riot, war, or even heard of land disputes until the 1993 local government election.

That election changed everything. Rich Fulani politicians and rich Plateau indigenous politicians began to fight over who would control Jos North Local Government—because that is where Terminus Market and the university are located, along with many other major markets. The Plateau indigenous politicians won the election. The rich Fulani politicians rejected the result. Then the riot started.

The military was still in power at the time. IBB sent soldiers to stop the chaos, and for a while, peace returned. But the politicians went into the bush and began to corrupt the minds of ordinary Fulani cattle rearers. They told them that the Plateau people were trying to chase them out of their land and that they should help fight back.

They turned the issue into a religious matter, telling Muslims that this was now a case of Muslim versus Christian. They lied to gullible people who could not read or write. And so the war began. It escalated between farmers and cattle rearers—people who had once enjoyed peace together in the bush.

This is how the conflict spread to the southern part of Nigeria. Fulani cattle rearers started moving with guns instead of sticks. They had been killing Christians in the north, and they thought southerners would also try to kill them. A man with a gun can do anything to make money.

From there, the Fulani began importing foreign Fulani from Mali, Chad, Senegal, and other countries across the globe. They lied to them, telling them it was a war between Christians and Muslims. But that is a lie. It is really a war between politicians fighting for control of state resources. We all know the truth, but we hide it.

The day we end corruption in Nigeria is the day peace will return to this country. The Fulani and farmers have no real issue. Land is not the problem. It is politicians lying to the people.

When I was growing up in my village, I used to go to the farm with my mother. We would see the Fulani with their cows. If their cow killed a bush animal, they freely gave it to us. We would give them corn in return. We played with them. We laughed with them.

But since democracy returned to Nigeria, we have never known peace. It is politicians causing all these problems—not land disputes. It is about who controls state resources and the wealth of Nigeria.
