THE MINDSET, THE MONEY, AND THE LONG GAME.

The salary difference between a care worker role and an NHS Band 5 nursing role is approximately £800 to £1,200 per month.

Over three years, that is between £28,800 and £43,200. That is not a career upgrade. That is a life-changing financial decision.

I want to open today with numbers — because the emotional case for making this move is already clear to everyone reading this.

You know why you want it. What helps you move is understanding what you are actually leaving on the table every month you stay where you are.

The 2026/27 Agenda for Change pay award confirms that entry-level Band 3 roles now exceed the minimum salary threshold for the Health and Care Visa. But Band 3 is not where this story ends — it is where it begins.

The NHS career ladder for internationally trained nurses and AHPs who enter at the right grade and progress deliberately looks like this:

— Band 5 Registered Nurse: £32,073 to £39,043

— Band 6 Senior Nurse/Specialist: £39,959 to £48,117

— Band 7 Advanced Practitioner/Team Leader: £46,148 to £52,809

Each band is a step. Each step is planned. And the nurses who reach Band 6 and Band 7 are not the most talented — they are the ones who entered at the right grade, understood the progression framework, and made deliberate decisions at each stage.

Your care home salary is not your market value. It is your current position.

They are different things.
