Sickle cell disorder causes trigeminal neuralgia.
Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic neuropathic pain arising from the trigeminal nerve.
It causes sudden, excruciating shocks of pain in the face where the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V) supplies sensation.
Sickled red blood cells can block the blood vessels supplying the trigeminal nerve.
The branches of the trigeminal nerve are 3.
And these are the points where the pain is felt.
1. Ophthalmic branch
2. Maxillary branch
3. Mandibular branch.
Chewing can be painful, talking can be painful, and sometimes, smiling.
