You have been applying to NHS jobs for three months. You have had two interviews. Neither converted. Nobody told you why.

Here is what is actually happening in that interview room — and why the problem started before you walked in.

NHS Band 5 interviews are structured, scored, and decided before you leave the building.

The panel has a mark scheme. Every answer you give is being assessed against predetermined criteria for each question.

The decision is not subjective. It is a points total.

What most internationally trained nurses do not know is that their interview performance is partly determined by their supporting statement — because the panel members who interview you are usually the same people who shortlisted you.

They have read what you wrote. They have formed a working hypothesis about who you are as a clinician. The interview confirms or contradicts that hypothesis.

If your supporting statement described you as a generalist, the questions will probe generalist competencies.

If it positioned you as a nurse with specific experience in clinical deterioration management, escalation, and medicines safety — the questions will follow that thread and you will be answering from a position of strength.

The other thing most nurses do not know is the NHS Values scoring framework.

Every competency question in an NHS Band 5 interview is being scored against the NHS Constitution Values — care, compassion, respect, dignity, commitment, quality.

Every answer needs to reference at least one of these values — not by quoting them, but by demonstrating them through the specific clinical example in your STAR answer.

Knowing this before you sit down changes everything.

💬 Save this post for later, You will have need of it again.
