NIGERIA RENEWS CALL FOR AFRICA’S PERMANENT SEAT ON UN SECURITY COUNCIL

Nigeria has renewed Africa’s long-standing demand for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, stressing that meaningful reforms within the global body must reflect equity, legitimacy, and inclusiveness.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, made the call during the informal meeting of the Plenary convened to hear a briefing on the United Nations 80 Initiatives ahead of the 80th Session of the General Assembly.

Senator Ibrahim reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Charter of the United Nations, particularly the preambles and the provisions of Articles 24 and 27 of the UN Charter.

According to him, there is an urgent need for all member states to respect and give full meaning to these provisions in order to guarantee sustainable sovereignty, fairness, and mutual respect among nations.

The Nigerian envoy further emphasized that reforms of such magnitude require legitimacy and broad-based support from all member states.

He noted that this objective can only be fully realized when Africa’s long-standing demand for permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council is addressed.
