Inspiring Mathematicians 5: Eudoxus of Cnidus

Eudoxus of Cnidus was a brilliant Greek mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who lived around 408–355 BCE and is considered one of the greatest scientific minds of the ancient world.

A student of Plato, Eudoxus made groundbreaking contributions to geometry, astronomy, and the theory of proportion, laying important foundations for later mathematics developed by Euclid and Archimedes.

He developed the “method of exhaustion,” an early technique for finding areas and volumes that anticipated integral calculus centuries before Newton and Leibniz.

In astronomy, he proposed one of the first mathematical models to explain planetary motion using concentric spheres.

His work greatly influenced Greek mathematical rigor and helped shape the logical structure of classical mathematics.
