Working train stations in Nigeria: 200+
Stations needing repairs: Not officially counted, but many on the old narrow‑gauge network are in poor condition or non‑operational.
Distribution across 36 states / 774 LGAs:
Nigeria’s rail network does NOT cover all states or LGAs. Only a subset of states have active stations.
What we Know from verified sources
Total Operational Stations
The Nigerian rail network currently has 200+ operational stations across both standard‑gauge and narrow‑gauge lines.
These include stations on:
Lagos–Ibadan Standard Gauge
Abuja–Kaduna Standard Gauge
Warri–Itakpe Standard Gauge
Lagos–Kano Narrow Gauge
Port Harcourt–Aba Narrow Gauge (partial)
Stations Needing Repairs
The Cape gauge (old colonial) network is in poor condition due to decades of under‑maintenance.
This means:
Many stations on the Western Line (Lagos–Kano)
Many stations on the Eastern Line (Port Harcourt–Maiduguri)
are non‑functional, abandoned, or require major rehabilitation.
Inference:
Since the narrow‑gauge network covers most of Nigeria’s historical stations, and it is described as being in poor condition, a large portion of the 200+ stations likely need repairs.
Coverage Across States and LGAs
Nigeria has:
36 states
774 LGAs
But the rail network does not reach all states and does not reach anywhere close to all LGAs.
States with active standard‑gauge service include:
Lagos
Ogun
Oyo
FCT Abuja
Kaduna
Delta
Edo
Kogi
States with narrow‑gauge service (partial or limited):
Lagos → Kano corridor
Port Harcourt → Aba corridor
Enugu, Makurdi, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Maiduguri (historical, many inactive)
States with NO train service at all:
Examples include:
Bayelsa
Ekiti
Cross River
Taraba
Ebonyi
Many others
LGAs with train stations:
Only a small fraction of the 774 LGAs have stations — likely under 100 LGAs.
Category Count / Status
Working train stations 200+ (confirmed)
Stations needing repairs Many (no official number; narrow‑gauge network in poor condition)
States with rail service Not all 36
LGAs with stations Far fewer than 774
