Inspiring Mathematicians 4: Pythagoras

Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher who lived around 570–495 BCE and is widely regarded as one of the founders of mathematical thought in the Western world.

Born on the island of Samos, he later established a philosophical and mathematical school in Croton in southern Italy, where numbers and geometry were studied as the foundation of reality and harmony.

He is most famous for the Pythagorean Theorem, which describes the relationship between the sides of a right triangle.

Beyond mathematics, Pythagoras and his followers explored music, astronomy, ethics, and philosophy, believing that numerical relationships governed the universe.

His ideas deeply influenced later Greek mathematics, philosophy, and scientific reasoning.
