Male spiders often present females with a “nuptial gift,” usually a dead insect wrapped carefully in silk.

On the surface, it looks almost romantic, but biologically it serves a very practical purpose.

For many spiders, mating is dangerous for males because females are often larger, more aggressive, and sometimes cannibalistic. In certain cases, a female may attack and eat the male during or after mating.

By giving her a wrapped prey item, the male keeps the female busy eating while he mates and transfers sperm more safely.

What makes it even more fascinating is that some males cheat.

Scientists discovered that certain spiders wrap worthless items like empty insect shells, plant material, or debris in silk to trick females into thinking they’re receiving food. If the female notices too quickly, she may end the mating early or attack the male.
