Today's Epistle is written based on the 2015 lecture of Dr. Howard Nicholas, a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Erasmus University's ISS in Rotterdam

This system was built to keep you down. That diagnosis is important. It is validating. It is true. But a diagnosis is not a destiny.

Africa has been defined for too long by what was done to it. It is time, it is past time, to be defined by what it does. Not in reaction to the world, but in the full expression of what this continent has always been: ancient, inventive, abundant, and indestructible.

The solutions to Africa's problems exist in Africa. In African minds. In African laboratories and farms and workshops and markets and classrooms.

The task is not to discover those solutions from the outside. The task is to create the conditions in which Africans can build them from within.

This continent does not need saving. It needs space, and resources, and policy, and leadership, and above all the unshakeable conviction of its own people, a conviction that says:
We built the pyramids when the rest of the world was still learning to farm. We navigated trade routes across the Sahara for a thousand years. We produced the mathematics that helped Europe emerge from its dark ages. We fed empires. We built cities. We wrote philosophy before philosophy had a Western name.

We have built before. We will build again. Not for the world's approval. Not in imitation of another people's model. But in the full, thunderous, magnificent expression of who we are and who we have always been.

The time for waiting is over.
Africa must build Africa.
And then we move
