If you are a healthcare assistant or care worker in the UK without a nursing registration — I need you to hear this clearly.

Your pathway to the NHS is real. It is just not the same pathway as a registered nurse. And conflating the two is what sends people down the wrong road for months.

The NHS has a structured career pathway that moves from Healthcare Support Worker to Nursing Associate to Registered Nurse — and both the NHS and private sector can offer this route through funded apprenticeship programmes.

Here is what that means practically:
The Nursing Associate Apprenticeship is a two-year programme that results in an NMC-registered Nursing Associate role at Band 4, with a salary of £25,147 to £27,596.

From Nursing Associate, you can progress to a Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship — a fully funded programme that results in a degree-level nursing qualification and NMC Band 5 registration.

The experience gained as a Nursing Associate counts toward the degree apprenticeship, shortening the programme.

This is not a shortcut. It is a ladder. And every rung of it is paid, funded, and NHS-employed.

Your care experience is not wasted. It is the foundation.
