This tragic wave of kidnappings in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, which took place on May 15, 2026, has left communities reeling as many children and teachers remain in captivity. Armed men attacked several schools- Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele; Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele - tearing through classrooms and shattering the promise of safety that schools should offer. The timing compounds the anguish: the kidnappings coincided with Nigeria’s Children’s Day, a moment meant to recognize and protect young lives, magnifying the national sorrow and urgency for answers.

Families are now living with unbearable uncertainty, torn between hope for a swift resolution and fear for the welfare of loved ones. Teachers, who devote themselves to shaping futures, have been forced into the same terrifying vulnerability as their pupils. Local responders, community leaders, and law enforcement face intense pressure to secure releases and reestablish trust, while humanitarian groups scramble to provide psychosocial support for affected relatives and children who escaped.
