Today's maths:

After independence Nigeria changed from using Pounds to Nigeria Naira on January 1, 1973 and on that day Naira was
₦1 = US$1.52
or
US$1 = about ₦0.658

This meant the Nigerian Naira was stronger than the US dollar at the time of its launch.

Today (27th of May 2026), the Nigerian Naira trades at roughly:

US$1 ≈ ₦1,370

which means
₦1 ≈ US$0.00073 (less than one-tenth of a cent).

To compare historically:

Year Exchange Rate
1973 ₦1 = US$1.52
2026 US$1 ≈ ₦1,370

That means the Naira has lost an enormous amount of value against the US dollar over the decades.

Which translated into Naira weakened by more than 2,000 times against the US dollar over about 53 years.

Using a simple long-term compound depreciation model:
1370×(1.155)^65 (that is to the power of 65)

Now if we assume that the Naira continues losing value at roughly the same average annual pace (~15.5% per year) until 2091estimated projection will be:

US$1 could be worth roughly ₦15 million – ₦16 million by 2091

or:

₦1 would be worth only a microscopic fraction of a US cent.
