It's Children day, yes children are gift from God and the future generations we see, a prayer answered to parents etc. we have a lot of beautiful things to say about children on this special day of their's , but I believe those good things are meant for children in the western world, not Nigeria, patriotism is saying things the way they are so that those in power can take action. Are we really celebrating children today? Okay tell me, how will the parents of those school children kidnapped in Kwara fell on this day? How will Leah Shaibu''s mother feel seeing the elites celebrate their own children while the children of the poor are at the mercy of kidnappers, they are in the forest, tortured, harassed, abused, forced into marriage, made to carry deadly explosive as bombers, killed. How will the parents of the children who are still traumatised by their experience with their abductors, children whose life will never remain the same even though they have be rescued, children who are battling with PTSD and other related mental health issues. Are we really celebrating the children when we cannot hold government and those in power accountable to prioritise the safety of our children? Please permit me to say that we are being hypocritical if we don't do the right thing to safeguard our children but come here to celebrate them. I believe the highest gift or contribution we can offer to our children this day is to speak out for them, let those at home see or hear that their colleagues in captivity has been reunited with their family, let those at home believe with convinction that they can go to school and still come back home safe , what other gift do you think they need? Freedom of life is the best gift I can think of.
Instead of celebrating those at home and neglecting those under intense pain in the bush we can use this energy to call out the government to take action.
You might not understand the gravity of danger our children are facing probably because it has not happened to you or anyone you know. But it might interest you to know that an injury to one is an injury to all, it's them today it might be me or you tomorrow.
