A Children's Day Indictment of a Nation That Devours Its Own Young
By a voice that refuses to be silent, in commemoration of Children's Day

"They did not choose Nigeria. Nigeria chose them, then abandoned them even before they could walk, speak, dream, or become."

What We Owe Them
On Children's Day, we are asked to celebrate. And celebrate we should, those children who have somehow, miraculously, transcended the cruelty of their circumstances to laugh, to dance, to dream. That resilience deserves our wonder.
But celebration without reckoning is betrayal dressed as joy.
We owe these children the truth: that we know what is happening, and that we have let it happen, and that "let it happen" is not an accident but a choice.
We owe them the demand: that every level of government fund child protection not as a line item but as a moral imperative. That the Child Rights Act be domesticated in every state. That schools be protected, staffed, and made sanctuaries. That NAPTIP be resourced to match the scale of the crisis that Nigerian Children are made to confront everyday. That baby factories be dismantled and perpetrators prosecuted. That every abducted child be brought home with the urgency of a President whose own child was taken.

We owe them, most of all, this: the refusal to look away.
Because the children of Nigeria are not statistics. They are not case studies. They are not footnotes in a UNICEF report or talking points in a campaign rally.

They are Chiamaka, who wanted to be a doctor.
They are Abdullahi, who could recite the names of every planet at age five.
They are Owolabi, who used to sing on the way to school.

They are millions of irreplaceable, specific, singular human lives and a nation that devours its young has no future worth fighting for.

Their only offence was being born Nigerian.
That offence should be ours to answer for.

And then we move!
