Inspiring Mathematicians 3: Thales of Miletus

Thales of Miletus was a pioneering Greek philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician who lived around 624–546 BCE and is often regarded as the first known mathematician in the Greek tradition.

Born in the city of Miletus in Ionia (modern-day Turkey), Thales is celebrated for introducing logical reasoning and deductive methods into mathematics, especially geometry.

He is credited with several geometric discoveries, including methods for measuring heights and distances using shadows and angles, and the theorem that a circle is bisected by its diameter.

Thales also sought natural explanations for phenomena rather than mythological ones, helping lay the foundations of scientific and mathematical thinking in the ancient world.
