Most nurses applying to the NHS are targeting the wrong Trusts — and wasting months on applications that were never going to convert because the Trust had already filled its CoS allocation.

This is one of the most frustrating and least visible problems in the NHS application process.

A Trust can have an active vacancy listing on NHS Jobs while simultaneously having zero remaining Certificate of Sponsorship allocation for the year.

The vacancy is real. The job exists. But the sponsorship capacity is exhausted — and the Trust is not required to tell you this on the job listing.

The nurses who move fastest from NMC PIN to NHS offer are the ones who target Trusts with confirmed active CoS capacity — not just open vacancies.

How to identify these Trusts:

— Trusts in the North, Midlands, and East of England consistently carry higher CoS allocation volumes than London and the South East — where competition for both roles and sponsorship slots is significantly higher

— Trusts that have been actively recruiting internationally in the last six months are more likely to have ongoing CoS allocation than Trusts who recruited heavily in 2023 and 2024 and are now managing their numbers

— Trusts advertising roles as "open to international applicants" or explicitly stating "visa sponsorship available" on NHS Jobs are signalling active capacity — this phrase is not added by default

Your in-country position makes you an attractive candidate to any Trust with active capacity.

Being already in the UK removes the 6–12 week international onboarding delay.

No flights to arrange. No accommodation to organise. Available to start within weeks of offer.

That is your competitive edge. Use it on the right Trusts.
