The other two passengers grabbed their things and vanished into the heat, disappearing behind a line of acacia trees. Now it was just the driver on an empty stretch of desert road and me. The wind carried sand against the bus windows.

I was confused. Angry. Scared. But I’d come too far to turn back.

I grabbed my bag, stepped off the bus, and watched it drive away, leaving me alone with my map, my hidden money, and a road that didn’t look like it wanted to bow its head.
