The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken its battle over the 2027 election timetable to the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn a Federal High Court judgement that nullified parts of its revised guidelines. The electoral body is also requesting a stay of execution pending the outcome of its appeal.

The lower court had ruled in favour of the Youth Party, declaring that INEC lacked the authority to shorten timelines already established under the Electoral Act 2026. The judgement affected deadlines for submission of party membership registers, candidate details, withdrawals, substitutions and campaign schedules.

INEC, however, argues that the ruling failed to address jurisdictional issues and insists that its actions align with provisions of the Electoral Act. The commission further questioned the legal standing of the plaintiff and described the case as hypothetical.

With preparations for the 2027 elections already drawing attention, the legal dispute could significantly influence how political parties conduct primaries and manage election processes.
