Ousmane Sonko has been elected Speaker of the National Assembly of Senegal. He was appointed Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on April 3, 2024, and served in that role until his dismissal on May 22, 2026. Sonko's PASTEF party holds a majority in the National Assembly, with 130 out of 165 seats.

The election of Sonko as Speaker is seen as a significant move, given his popularity among young Senegalese and his anti-corruption stance. However, his path to the Assembly presidency is not without challenges, as a constitutional clause requires deputies to resign from their current roles before taking office.
In line with this, President Faye has approached the country's apex court to rule on the constitutionality of making Sonko the head of Parliament.

In his first speech as Speaker, Sanko boasted that there will be no government without PASTEF which is the ruling party.
