FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has claimed that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s withdrawal from the APC governorship race was tied to an agreement aimed at stopping impeachment efforts against him. Speaking in Abuja during an inspection of projects ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary, Wike alleged that the understanding required Fubara not to pursue a second term in 2027.

The former Rivers governor said he was not surprised by Fubara’s decision, questioning why the governor picked up a nomination form in the first place if such an arrangement existed. He accused his former political ally of failing to demonstrate “gentlemanliness” and betrayal of trust.

Wike also threw his support behind APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda, describing him as experienced and politically tested. As political tensions continue to shape Rivers State’s future, fresh questions are emerging over alliances, power dynamics and the road to 2027.
