Human rights are essential to social harmony, yet their credibility is often weakened by accusations of selective enforcement. Critics argue that countries in the global North sometimes apply human rights principles inconsistently, shaping responses according to political and economic interests rather than universal standards. Such perceived hypocrisy can undermine trust in international human rights systems and weaken their moral authority.
The Charter of Kurukan Fuga, also known as the Manden Charter, offers an important historical perspective on justice and human dignity. Established in 1235–1236 under Sundiata Keita after the unification of the Mali Empire, it is regarded as one of the earliest declarations of human rights and social justice. As an oral charter promoting fairness, social order, and communal responsibility, it highlights that principles of justice and human dignity have deep historical roots extending beyond modern Western traditions.
