Ahmes was an ancient Egyptian scribe and mathematician who lived around 1650 BCE and is best known for copying the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus, one of the oldest and most important surviving mathematical documents in history.

Written during Egypt’s Second Intermediate Period, the papyrus contains arithmetic, geometry, fractions, algebra-like problems, and practical calculations used in construction, trade, and surveying.

Ahmes described the work as a transmission of earlier knowledge, showing that African mathematics was already highly developed long before classical Greek mathematics emerged.

His work demonstrates the sophistication of ancient African scientific thought and remains a crucial source for understanding early mathematics.
