I want to end today with something I say to every nurse I work with who is sitting in a care home wondering if the NHS will ever actually happen.

It will — but only if you treat it like the professional strategic objective it is, not like a wish.

The nurses I have watched move from care homes into NHS Band 5 roles in the last two years were not the most qualified.

They were not the ones who had been in the UK the longest. They were the ones who made a decision on a specific day, built a plan around that decision, and executed it one step at a time without waiting for perfect conditions.

The conditions are never perfect. The process is always messy in the middle.

There is always a document that takes longer than expected, a test date that feels too soon, a recruiter who does not respond. None of that is unusual. All of it is navigable.

What separates the nurses who make it from the ones who stay stuck is not talent or luck. It is sequencing and support — knowing the right order to move in.
