Inspiring Mathematicians 1: Imhotep

Imhotep was an extraordinary scholar, architect, engineer, physician, and mathematical thinker who lived in Ancient Egypt around 2650 BCE during the reign of Pharaoh Djoser.

Widely regarded as one of the earliest known intellectuals in recorded history, he is best remembered for designing the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, the world’s first large-scale stone pyramid.

Imhotep applied advanced principles of geometry, measurement, and structural planning in architecture, making him a foundational figure in engineering and practical mathematics.

Beyond architecture, he was also revered for his contributions to medicine and astronomy, and later generations honored him as a sage and even deified him.

His legacy reflects the deep scientific and mathematical sophistication of ancient African civilization.
