July 22nd 2028. Write it down. Put it in your phone. Set a reminder!

That is the date your transition window closes — and the Home Office has already said it is kept under review, which means it could close earlier.

The transition period allowing care workers already in the UK to extend or switch visa routes is currently expected to run until 22 July 2028 — but it is explicitly kept under review.

"Kept under review" is immigration language for "we may change this before the stated date if the policy environment shifts."

I am not telling you this to create panic. I am telling you this because the number of care workers and healthcare assistants I speak to who are treating this deadline as a distant abstraction is genuinely concerning.

Two years sounds like a long time. It is not — not when you factor in the time needed to identify the right role, re-engineer your application documents, clear the NHS shortlisting process, receive a job offer, wait for CoS issuance, and submit your switch application with all supporting documents in order.

The nurses who will complete their switch safely and comfortably are the ones who start the process in 2026 — not the ones who start it in mid-2028 when the deadline is weeks away and every adviser is overloaded with panicking applicants.

You have time. Use it.
