I want to be honest with you about something.

Not every care worker in the UK has a direct path to an NHS nursing role. And telling you otherwise would be doing you real harm.

The in-country switch post that brought many of you here was written for internationally trained registered nurses — nurses with NMC registration, CBT passes, and OSCE completions who are working in care homes while their NHS applications progress.

If you are a qualified registered nurse from your home country who is currently working as a care worker — your pathway to Band 5 is real and it is faster than you think.

We will cover that in detail later this week.

But if you are a healthcare assistant or care worker without a nursing registration — your pathway exists but it's different.

And knowing the difference now saves you months of applying for roles you are not yet eligible for.

Here is the honest breakdown:

— Registered nurse with NMC in progress: direct Band 5 switch pathway — fastest route.

— Registered nurse from home country, no NMC yet: NMC registration first, then switch — completely achievable.

— Healthcare assistant with care certificate and NHS experience: Band 3 to 4 pathway — requires specific positioning and NHS experience evidence.

— Care worker with degree in health-related field: NHS administrative or coordinator pathway — viable and sponsorable

— Care worker without clinical qualification or degree: longer pathway requiring additional training — honest but not hopeless

Whatever category you are in — there is a next step. But the next step is different for each of you.

And knowing which one is yours is the most important thing you can do this week.

💬 Not sure which pathway applies to you? Comment PATHWAY and I will help you identify your correct route.
