Every 25 May, the world comes together to commemorate Africa Day, a date that transcends geographical boundaries to celebrate not only the cultural diversity and natural wealth of the world's most diverse continent, but also its determination to build a prosperous, strong and united future.

The Organization of African Unity (OAU) was founded on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when leaders from 32 newly independent African nations signed the OAU Charter. This historic summit established the continent's first major post-independence continental institution to promote unity, defend sovereignty, and eradicate colonialism.

Africa Day, celebrated every May 25, marks the founding of the now called African Union. It is a time to recognize the continent's progress and potential, its dynamism and the depth of its inventiveness and cultures.
