This is what they use to get away with their corruption AND evil deeds against humanity. You see people killing their own brothers and sisters in the name of politics and power, stealing public funds, dehumanising their fellow humans, causing insecurity here and there, and creating more poverty and hardship—only to use the phrase 'It's politics' to hide their evil actions against mankind.
Sadly, we see more of this across Nigeria, where I came from. It is what it is. It's politics, they say, and that is also a part of human nature. To kill, steal, and demean the weak."

Yes, the phrase "It's politics" may function as a psychological shield, a rhetorical escape hatch, and a cultural coping mechanism used to justify or dismiss complex human behaviors. Among them are those in power, the leaders who are supposed to be serving humanity. But most times the opposite.

When individuals or leaders use the phrase, they are attempting to separate personal morality from professional actions. It reframes harmful choices—like corruption, broken promises, or systemic neglect—not as personal failures or crimes, but as compliance with an unwritten set of systemic rules. It implies that the actor had no choice because "the game" demanded it.

This mindset aligns closely with Realpolitik or Machiavellianism, political philosophies originating in Europe that argue statecraft and power are inherently detached from conventional morality. In this view, survival, control, and winning are the only true metrics of success, making ethics secondary or irrelevant.

In the Nigerian context, "It's politics" often carries a heavier, more painful weight. It is frequently invoked to rationalize:
Prebendalism: The allocation of public funds and state offices to ethnic or tribal clients instead of based on merit.
The "National Cake" Mentality: Viewing public office as a means to slice away resources for a specific group, rather than a duty to serve the collective populace.
Electoral Violence: Dismissing thuggery, voter intimidation, or ballot disruption as mere tactical maneuvers rather than assaults on democratic stability.
🧠 It Remains As A Tool for Citizen Apathy
For everyday citizens, saying "It's politics" can be a defense mechanism against chronic disappointment. It serves as a linguistic shrug that acknowledges a grim reality while expressing a sense of helplessness. However, it also breeds dangerous political apathy, lowering the bar of accountability and normalizing substandard leadership as an unchangeable reality.

While the phrase "It's Politics” is often weaponised to excuse evil and corruption, true politics is theoretically the exact opposite.
Politics, which is supposed to be the process by which groups of people make collective decisions for the people and for the goods of all, building institutions, enforcing justice, and lifting millions out of poverty. But now used to destroy all in the name of "It's Politics”
