Yasuke was only truly seen by a pagan warlord.

He came from the red earth of Africa.
Betrayed by his own people, he was sold into chains and shipped to Mozambique.

There, the Church and Muslim traders delivered the second and third betrayals. The Jesuits baptized him “Francisco” yet treated him as property. Faiths that claimed enlightenment profited from or ignored his suffering.

But in Sengoku Japan, the “pagan” warlord Oda Nobunaga looked at the towering African and saw a man not a slave, not a beast.

He scrubbed the skin to confirm the truth, then laughed with delight.
Nobunaga saw nobility where others saw a slave, he gave Yasuke a sword, a good wage worthy of a nobility, and a place at his side. In the court of a man who bowed to no god, Yasuke became member of the elite class through raw merit alone.

At Honnō-ji, when betrayal struck and thirteen thousand men attacked, Yasuke fought with unbreakable loyalty. He stood by Nobunaga until the end, then by his son Nobutada, battling until his blade was gone.
