Porto Seguro (in the southern part of Bahia) is officially recognized as the first place the Portuguese discovered and set foot in Brazil. Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet first sighted land nearby (Mount Pascoal) on April 22, 1500, and anchored in the safe harbor known as Porto Seguro.
