Aubergine (Solanum melongena / Igbagba / Garden Egg)
In Traditional Medicine (Nigerian & Global Contexts):
· For Diabetes Management (Nigeria): Leaves and fruits are prepared as soup condiments or juice extracts and consumed regularly.
· For Cholesterol Management: Aqueous extract of the fruit is consumed to lower blood cholesterol levels.
· For Joint Pain/Rheumatism: Warmed fruit paste is applied topically to painful joints (Surinam traditional medicine). Leaves are also used externally for inflamed areas.
· For Dysentery/Digestive Issues: Leaves mixed with stem bark are prepared as a decoction and consumed.
· For Bleeding/Wounds: Powdered root is applied externally to wounds and taken internally.
· For Earache/Toothache: Juice of the root is used as ear drops for otitis or applied to aching teeth.
· For Asthma: Root preparations are used to treat asthma symptoms.
· For Skin Conditions: Leaves are used externally (topically) for treating burns, cold sores, and abscesses. The leaves are considered toxic and are therefore used mostly externally.
