The NHS will make you a job offer. It will state a salary.
Most international nurses accept it within 24 hours without asking a single question. Some of them leave £2,000 to £4,000 on the table in that moment.
A Band 5 nurse does not automatically start at the bottom of the Band 5 range.
If you have relevant post-registration experience — and most international nurses do — you may be eligible to start higher within the band.
This is not a negotiation in the traditional sense. It is a formal process of experience recognition that NHS Trusts are permitted to apply and that many will apply — if you ask.
The question to ask is this: "Given my post-registration clinical experience, is there scope to consider a higher starting point within the band under the Agenda for Change provisions for experience recognition?"
That one sentence, asked at the right moment has the potential to change your life. Not always in all cases. But often enough not asking is a financial decision you are making by default.
The other conversation worth having at offer stage is unsocial hours enhancement. NHS contracts include enhancement payments for nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
Understanding your rota pattern and its enhancement structure before you sign tells you what your actual monthly take-home will be — which is frequently higher than the headline salary figure suggests.
Know what you are accepting before you accept it.
