The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak a global health emergency following the spread of the rare Bundibugyo strain across parts of East and Central Africa.

More than 600 suspected cases and at least 139 deaths have been recorded, mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak first began. Cases have also spread to Uganda, including confirmed infections in Kampala.

Health experts are particularly concerned because there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

The outbreak has also revived memories of Nigeria’s successful fight against Ebola in 2014, when swift emergency action helped prevent what many feared could become a nationwide crisis.

Late Nigerian doctor, Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, was widely praised for recognizing the symptoms of the infected Liberian patient and insisting he be isolated, a move credited with stopping wider transmission. She later died after contracting the virus herself.

In October 2014, the WHO officially declared Nigeria Ebola-free, with the country’s response praised globally as a model for epidemic control.

Nigeria’s Ebola success story was later portrayed in the 2016 Nollywood film 93 Days, directed by Steve Gukas and produced by Bolanle Austen-Peters, Dotun Olakunri and Pemon Rami.

The film highlights the bravery and sacrifice of Nigerian healthcare workers during the crisis, with Bimbo Akintola portraying Dr. Adadevoh, alongside Hollywood actors Danny Glover and Tim Reid.
