YOUR LUCK SAYS ALOT ABOUT YOU!

As humans, we love blaming luck more than I actually want to admit.
That person got the job because they knew someone. That creator blew up because the algorithm favored them. That entrepreneur succeeded because they had the right connections at the right time.

It’s a comforting story. Because if luck is purely accidental, randomly distributed, and completely outside your control, then your lack of it isn’t your fault. You just have to wait for your turn.
But what if that’s not how luck actually works?

In 1978, a neurologist named James Austin wrote a book called Chase, Chance, and Creativity. Almost nobody has heard of it. But it contains a framework that completely changes how you think about luck. Not as something that happens to you. But as something you can actually influence, cultivate, and expand.

According to Austin, there are four distinct types of luck. And while one of them is completely out of your hands, the other three are (kind of) skills.

The Four Types of Luck

1. Blind Luck
This is what most people mean when they talk about luck.
Winning the lottery. Being born into the right family. A random stroke of fortune that had nothing to do with anything you did. It requires zero effort and zero skill.

But you can’t replicate this kind of luck. You can’t build a life or a career around it. And waiting for it is probably the worst strategy you could possibly have.

2. Luck from Motion
This is the hustler’s luck.
It comes from simply being in motion. Going places, talking to strangers, starting projects, posting on Substack, sending emails to prospects, saying yes to things before you know where they’re going.

You’re not necessarily looking for something specific. You’re just making yourself a larger target for opportunity. The more you move, the more surface area you create for something good to find you.

3. Luck from Noticing
This is the luck of the prepared mind.
You can walk past the same opportunity a hundred times and see nothing. Then on the 101st time, because of something you recently read or a conversation you just had, you suddenly see it clearly. The opportunity was always there. Your ability to see it changed.

As Louis Pasteur once said: “Chance favors the prepared mind.”

4. Luck from Identity
This is the most powerful one. And the strangest.

It comes from being a very specific kind of person with a very specific set of skills, obsessions, and reputation. Eventually you become the only person who can solve a particular problem or speak on a particular topic. And luck starts finding you. Because you’ve made yourself impossible to ignore in your specific corner of the world.

Expanding Your Luck Surface Area

Let me explain this with a simple idea.
Think about surface area. In physics, it just means how much of something is exposed to the outside world. The more surface area something has, the more contact it makes with everything around it.

Now apply that to your life.

If you follow the same routine every single day, talk to the same people, go to the same places, and never do anything where the outcome is uncertain, your luck surface area is tiny.

Almost nothing new can reach you because you’ve closed yourself off from almost everything. You’ve built a very comfortable, very sealed life.

Now imagine someone who says yes to things before they know where it’s going. Who starts projects without a clear destination. Who sends the email even when it feels a little uncomfortable. Who shows up to events where they don’t know a single person in the room.

That person has a massive luck surface area. For him, opportunities have somewhere to land.

And you can see this pattern everywhere once you start looking for it.

Take MrBeast for example. He didn't blow up overnight. For years before anyone knew his name, he was uploading constantly, studying what worked, obsessing over every detail, reaching out to other creators, doing everything with uncertain outcomes. By the time the algorithm "luckily" picked him up, he had already spent years making himself impossible to ignore. The luck looked random from the outside. From the inside, it was inevitable.

But here’s the part that most people miss. The opportunities are almost secondary.

What’s actually compounding underneath all of it is YOU.

Your ability to read situations. Your instinct for what’s worth pursuing. Your comfort with uncertainty. Your eye for things other people walk straight past.

And that’s the version of you that luck was always looking for.
