Nigeria is Moving Toward Competitive Authoritarianism
Nigeria is not a dictatorship.
But there are warning signs of what scholars call “competitive authoritarianism”:
elections happen,
opposition exists,
media operates,
but the ruling establishment has overwhelming structural advantages.
The danger is gradual normalization of:
elite consensus politics,
suppression through institutions rather than tanks,
political intimidation,
selective use of anti-corruption agencies,
judicial influence,
party capture.
