The danger to democracy in Nigeria today is not likely to come through a classic military coup. It is more likely to emerge through what political scientists call a “democratic coup” — where democratic institutions still exist on paper, elections still hold, courts still sit, and legislatures still function, but the real spirit of democracy is hollowed out from within.
The crisis surrounding Siminalayi Fubara and his political conflict with Nyesom Wike has become one of the clearest case studies of this danger in modern Nigeria.
