Respectfully Addressing Period Poverty and Nigeria’s Real Priorities

Greetings Mercy Johnson, Your Excellencies President Tinubu Administration, Opposition Parties, and Independent Political Leaders, 240 million Nigerians are writing out of deep concern, frustration, and disappointment about the ongoing conversation surrounding the ₦25,000 menstrual hygiene kit associated with Mercy Johnson’s brand. As a woman and a mother, Mercy, respectfully we expected empathy and compassion—especially knowing you have daughters of your own. Millions of Nigerian girls and women cannot afford even a basic sanitary pad. This is not the time for premium pricing on essential items.

Whether the product is just a pad or a full premium hygiene kit, the reality remains the same 240 million Nigerians are struggling, and menstrual hygiene should not be a luxury. If this kit cannot be made free for the girls in Nigeria in the 36 states 774 LGA who need it most, then it should not be marketed as a solution to period poverty with all due respect

But this issue goes beyond one product. It exposes a deeper failure of leadership across all political lines for decades

To the Federal Government, Opposition Parties, and Independent Candidates:

Nigeria does not need more photo ops, PR events, or empty interviews. We need leaders who will address the root causes of our national crises:

Fix the economic conditions that fuel boko haram and other insecurity for decades

Create real jobs for 240 million Nigerians now 5/21/2026 no lies, no slogans

Invest massively in farming and agriculture so we can become food‑sufficient again now 5/21/2026

Provide the basic services that have been promised for decades—free electricity, free or affordable data/WiFi, and functioning public infrastructure in all the 36 states 774 LGA

Guarantee free housing, education, and healthcare in all the 36 states 774 LGA

Ensure menstrual products are accessible free for every girl and woman in the 36 states 774 LGA

These are not luxuries. These are the foundations of a functioning society.

Nigeria is rich in people, land, talent, and potential. Yet Nigerians are dragged backward every day by policies and decisions that ignore the suffering of 240 million Nigerians. We cannot continue like this.

Respectfully we are urging all of you—public figures, policymakers, and political actors—to stop focusing on distractions and start addressing the real issues that affect the daily lives of Nigerians. Period poverty is real. Hunger is real. Unemployment is real. Insecurity is real. The suffering is real.

Nigeria deserves better. Nigerian women and girls deserve better. And we will continue to speak until meaningful action is taken now 5/21/2026
