Unexpected Connections
Who Helped You When You Didn’t Expect It?

Some years ago, I embarked on my first rail journey from Kaduna to Abuja. I was traveling with my mother and my three sons—one of whom lives with Cerebral Palsy. The trip itself was seamless; the trains were in excellent condition, and the scenery rolled by as we enjoyed a smooth ride into the capital.

However, the true test began when we arrived at Idu Station.
It was the final trip of the day, and darkness had already fallen. To our dismay, the primary exit was closed, forcing all passengers toward a secondary route—a daunting, long flight of stairs. My situation was a logistical mountain to climb:
My son living with CP is a "heavy chap," and I had him hoisted on my shoulder. I had multiple bags of luggage to maneuver and two other active, energetic sons who needed constant eyes on them.
I began descending the stairs, my mother and I were struggling to manage it all. Out of the crowd, a gentleman from our coach stepped forward. Without hesitation or being asked, he walked up and offered to carry my son.

Our hearts melted.

This total stranger held my son comfortably and securely, navigating those long stairs with ease. What could have been a moment of physical exhaustion and stress became a profound display of empathy.
As it turned out, the universe had aligned our paths perfectly. We were both headed toward Lugbe, so we were able to offer him a lift, giving us time to talk and exchange numbers. That stranger was Zakari, an Officer with the Nigerian Air Force.

True to his profession, he didn't just serve his country that day—he served a family in need. We have remained in touch till his number stopped going through. However, this is a reminder that a single act of kindness can turn a difficult journey into a lifelong friendship.

"Kindness is the light that dissolves all walls between strangers." ✨

Gladden Ngozi: That man didn’t just carry your son down the stairs, he carried part of your stress and fear in that moment.
Acts like this remind us that humanity is still alive and that sometimes strangers become angels in our most difficult moments.
