Your Excellencies, Esteemed Nigerian government, opposition parties, independent candidates. 240 million Nigerians are writing to express deep concern regarding the recent public comments made by your senior special adviser on policy communication, Daniel Bwala, concerning Nigerians and the right to bear arms.

While the Constitution affirms the right to private defense, many Nigerians feel that the focus on firearms distracts from the urgent need to address the root causes of insecurity, including the long-standing threat posed by boko haram and other violent extremist groups responsible for severe harm and loss of life.

240 Million of Nigerians continue to face displacement, fear, and economic hardship. Farmers cannot safely return to their land, families remain uprooted, and children are unable to attend school. These are issues that require decisive, systemic solutions rather than public debates that appear to shift responsibility onto Nigerians

The perception that government officials are prioritizing commentary over concrete action has caused frustration and a sense of abandonment among the 240 million Nigerians. Nigerians believe that leadership should focus on dismantling the drivers of insecurity so that Nigerians can rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

We urge your administration to prioritize comprehensive security reforms, strengthen intelligence and counterterrorism efforts, and invest in long-term strategies that restore stability. Nigerians deserve a government that demonstrates commitment through action, not rhetoric.
