“You wanted social media banned during EndSARS, now you’re using social media to cry to Nigerians” – VeryDarkMan blasts Desmond Elliot
Popular social media activist VeryDarkMan has launched a scathing attack on actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot following reports of internal crisis and alleged mistreatment within the APC ahead of the Lagos State House of Assembly primaries.
The controversy started after Desmond Elliot reportedly expressed frustration over how some APC leaders were allegedly sidelining and frustrating him politically despite years of loyalty and service within the party. His emotional reaction quickly sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians revisiting his past comments during the 2020 EndSARS protests.
Reacting strongly, VeryDarkMan accused the Surulere lawmaker of only remembering the Nigerian people when his political comfort was threatened.
According to him:
“Desmond Elliot, you assumed office since 2015 without telling us anything and now there’s crisis in paradise, you suddenly remember the public and start explaining things to us? Now you know you have people, now you know social media works.
You are the same person that said the Federal Government should ban or regulate social media. When Nigerian youths were crying in 2020 during EndSARS, you were the one that came out to propose regulation of social media. Have you forgotten?
Since 2015 till now, I can count the projects you have done. You built bridge, public toilet and some other small small things since 2015, and now when the going is no longer good for you politically, you suddenly turned back to the same people you ignored.”
VeryDarkMan’s statement immediately triggered intense reactions across social media, with thousands of Nigerians debating Desmond Elliot’s political career, his relationship with Nigerian youths, and the lingering anger from the EndSARS era.
Many Nigerians still remember the backlash Desmond Elliot received in October 2020 after a video surfaced showing him speaking at the Lagos State House of Assembly where he called social media a dangerous tool contributing to violence and fake news during the protests. His comments at the time were interpreted by many young Nigerians as support for censorship, leading to weeks of criticism, memes, and public outrage against the actor.
For some Nigerians, the latest criticism goes beyond politics. They believe it reflects years of frustration with politicians who only appear close to the people when they face political battles, elections, or internal party problems, while remaining distant during periods of economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, police brutality, and rising suffering among ordinary citizens.
Others, however, defended Desmond Elliot, arguing that he has carried out several constituency projects in Surulere and that public office often comes with limitations many citizens do not fully understand. Supporters also claimed that social media users unfairly target him because of his celebrity background and his controversial EndSARS comments.
Still, VeryDarkMan’s emotional outburst has once again reopened old wounds from the EndSARS movement and reignited conversations about accountability, loyalty, political hypocrisy, and whether Nigerian politicians truly stand with the people during difficult times.
As reactions continue pouring in online, many Nigerians say the situation is another reminder that in politics, the same public often ignored during times of power suddenly becomes important whenever political storms begin to gather.
