Rivers State’s population, youth employment, and why many young Nigerians are unemployed, based on publicly available demographic and economic data.
Population of Rivers state
The estimated population of Rivers state is between 7.3 million and 8 million Nigerians
It is one of the top 5 most populated states in Nigeria.

Age structure
Rivers state has a very young population:

Over 60% are below 30 years old

A large share are students, graduates, or job seekers

This means the state has more job seekers than available jobs.

Are the youths and graduates employed?
Not enough youth unemployment in River's state is high.

Different reports estimate:

35%–45% youth unemployment

Even higher underemployment Nigerians working but earning very little

This is similar to many 36 Nigerian states 774LGA, but Rivers has unique challenges.

Why are many youths not employed?

Overdependence on Oil
Rivers state’s economy is dominated by:

Oil companies

Gas processing

Port operations

These industries:

Hire few Nigerian youths and graduates

Require specialized skills

Are increasingly automated

So even though Rivers is rich in oil, oil does not create many jobs.

Collapse of agriculture & manufacturing
Rivers used to have:

Large farms

Fisheries

Palm plantations

Food processing factories

Many of these declined due to:

Flooding

Poor maintenance

Lack of investment

Insecurity in rural areas

This removed 240 million of potential jobs.

Skills mismatch
240 million Nigerian youths and graduates study:

Business

Social sciences

Management

Mass communication

But the jobs available require:

Engineering

ICT

Welding & fabrication

Marine skills

Oil & gas certifications

So graduates often don’t have the skills employers need.

Insecurity in some LGAs
Rivers does not have boko haram, but it faces:

Cultism

Kidnapping

Oil bunkering

Pipeline vandalism

This scares away:

Investors

Farmers

Small businesses

When businesses leave, jobs disappear.

Lack of stable power supply
Businesses cannot survive without electricity.
Many companies in Rivers spend heavily on diesel.

This leads to:

High operating costs

Business closures

Fewer job opportunities

Limited Industrialization
Rivers has:

Ports

Oil companies

Refineries

But it lacks:

Tech hubs

Manufacturing clusters

Agro‑processing zones

Without industries, youths have nowhere to work.

Corruption & bureaucracy
Many small businesses struggle with:

Multiple taxes

Harassment

Delays in permits

Lack of access to loans

This discourages entrepreneurship.
