A nurse I know passed her NMC English requirement.

Her score was legitimate, her band was correct, her application was approved.

Then she applied for her Skilled Worker Visa — and the Home Office rejected her. Same score. Different test code.

This is one of the most avoidable failures in the entire UK migration pathway — and it happens because most people don't know the NMC and the Home Office are running separate compliance checks against different approved test lists.

The NMC will accept a standard IELTS Academic result.

The Home Office, for Skilled Worker Visa purposes, requires specifically the IELTS UKVI Academic — a version of the same test taken at a UKVI-approved centre, generating a result with a specific identifier code the Home Office system recognises.

If you take the wrong version, your score can be perfectly valid for NMC registration and completely inadmissible for your visa application.

You will not be told this at the test centre. It is your responsibility to know before you book.

My rule is consistent across every client: IELTS UKVI Academic or OET taken at an approved centre.

This covers both regulators simultaneously, with one result, in one sitting.

There is no scenario where I advise a client to take a version of this test that only satisfies one of the two bodies they need to satisfy.
One test. Both doors. No surprises at the border.
