Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said Nigeria’s push for fiscal federalism will remain ineffective without fairness, accountability and shared responsibility across all tiers of government. Speaking at a tax compliance workshop in Abuja, he stressed that reforms aim to build a more equitable and sustainable tax system that strengthens national development and reduces dependence on volatile revenues.
Nigeria Revenue Service Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, warned that compliance imbalances among states and government-owned entities are undermining fiscal fairness, adding that Nigeria must ensure every tier contributes its share to the national revenue pool. He revealed plans for a performance-based recognition system for compliant states and said the NRS is targeting N40 trillion in tax revenue this year.
The officials called for stronger collaboration, technology-driven compliance and improved accountability to boost revenue, close leakages and restore trust in Nigeria’s fiscal system.
