POLITICAL OBITUARY: THE LABOUR PARTY DEFECTORS
Died of Self-Inflicted Wounds. No Flowers, Please.
They came in on borrowed wings.
Not on the strength of their names, not on the weight of their records, not on the merit of any vision they had articulated or any sacrifice they had made. They came in riding the shoulders of millions of ordinary Nigerians — the market women who queued in the sun, the young men who trekked between polling units, the first-time voters who believed, for one fragile season, that their country could be redeemed. That wave had a name: the Obidient Movement. And these men and women did not build it. They merely stood at the shoreline and let it carry them to Abuja.
That was 2023. Remember it, because they forgot it almost immediately.
The Betrayal Was Not Sudden. It Was Calculated.
There was no moment of passion, no crisis of conscience that broke them. The defection to the APC was not a fall — it was a transaction. Conducted quietly. Rationalised loudly. They spoke, as traitors invariably do, the language of pragmatism. "We must work from within." "The structure is where the power is." "Our constituents will understand."
Their constituents did not send them to understand power. Their constituents sent them to confront it.
But the APC counter was open, the terms were negotiable, and the moral ledger — well, that had never been their strongest currency. So they deposited everything: the mandate, the movement, the memory of what brought them there. And they walked across.
The Machine Has No Loyalty. Only Appetite.
Here is what they did not reckon with, or perhaps refused to see: the APC is not a party. It is a processing plant. It receives political raw material, extracts whatever is useful, and discards the casing. It has done this to bigger names than theirs. It has swallowed governors, senators, and presidential aspirants, and produced nothing but compliance and clientage.
They thought they were joining. They were, in fact, being consumed.
The primaries came — those exquisitely choreographed exercises in managed outcomes that serve as rehearsals for the main electoral fraud — and the machine looked at these former Labour legislators and rendered its verdict without ceremony: you are not one of us. The delegates who were purchased did not vote for them. The results that were written did not carry their names. The structure they had genuflect before turned its back with the indifference it reserves for the already squeezed.
They had given up everything to gain access to a room that was never going to let them in.
The Electoral Act Closes the Escape Route.
And now the Electoral Act 2026 stands at the exit like a bailiff. The old Nigerian legislative tradition — defect today, defect again tomorrow, follow the money through every door — has been interrupted. The law, whatever its other deficiencies, has tightened the noose around precisely the kind of unprincipled movement these legislators had mastered. They cannot easily return. They cannot easily pivot. The bridge behind them was burned by their own hand, and the bridge ahead does not exist.
They are stranded in the no-man's land between a movement they betrayed and a machine that rejected them — politically stateless, electorally exposed, and morally bankrupt.
What They Leave Behind
They leave behind constituents who made a genuine, courageous political choice and had it stolen — not by INEC, not by Tinubu, but by the very men and women those constituents elected. They leave behind a cautionary tale about what happens when the vessel mistakes itself for the water. They leave behind seats that were never truly theirs to surrender.
They leave behind, above all, a question that 2027 will answer with brutal finality: what do you do with a politician who has nothing left to sell, because he has already sold everything?
Epitaph:
Here lies the Labour Party defectors.
They were carried to power by a movement they did not build,
sustained by a mandate they did not earn,
and destroyed by an ambition they could not control.
The APC did not kill them.
They were already dead the morning they crossed the floor.
May their constituents remember. May their replacements be warned.
